Few days ago Huawei unveiled the new phone in its Mate line-up — Huawei Mate 9 on a press meet in Munich, Germany. The new Mate 9 is the successor to the earlier Mate 8 which was one of the highest selling devices of Huawei Technologies.
Huawei Mate 9 has some serious improvements and upgrades on the specs sheet like SoC, Battery, Camera, some software tools etc.
Display
Mate 9 has a massive 5.9-inch FHD display which is a 2.5D curved display panel on the top. This device has 16.7M color, 95% color saturation and 1500:1 contrast ratio. The display is very special because it is carefully crafted under one hour of a CNC Milling Machine, Comes in two display variants – a model with a 1080p “full HD” display, and a Porsche-branded edition with nearly twice the resolution.
Body and Storage
This device has substantially high body to screen ratio which means more of the front is occupied by screen. It also has a IR blaster, volume rockers are on right and the SIM card slot is on the left, luckily 3.5mm headphone jack is also present on the top of the device, we are happy that they didn’t took the Apple’s footprint. For the easy and smooth daily operation they have included a 4GB RAM coupled with 64GB of internal storage and a Micro SDXC slot and implementation of UFS 2.1 which will improve the read write speed of the storage.
Battery
If you know the Mate line-up, then you also may know that the Mate line-up boasts a really long battery life. And with no surprise the new Mate 9 is also taking the legacy further with its 4000mAH battery which promises 2 days of battery life. With the inclusion of the such huge size of battery the charging time will also increase with the normal charger. so, to cut such problems Huawei has included SuperCharge feature on this device. It is the home-made and what it does is cut the Full charging time to 90 Minutes by supplying 5A/3.5-5V power. Huawei also claims that 30 minutes of charge can give one day of battery life.
Camera
Mate 9 will feature second generation of Leica Camera which is developed on the collaboration of both Leica and Huawei. The rear camera unit has dual setup just like the P9. It has 20MP Monochrome leans and a 12MP color leans which comes equipped with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF), the front camera is a 8MP Autofocus sensor. There is also the inclusion of bunch of camera features such as, the ‘Hybrid Zoom’ it will allow you Optical Zoom of 2X without any picture quality losses. ‘Face Detection’ the new face detection feature will recognize faces under low light event faster and the 4K video encoding is also possible in this device.
Chipset
The Huawei Mate 9 features a latest SoC of Huawei home-grown SoC manufacturing company HiSilicon Kirin 960. It is Octacore processor with 4 A73 cores running at 2.36GHz each a 4 A53 cores running at 1.84GHz which might be the most powerful Android device. The GPU is also a beast with Mali-G71MP8 GPU running at 900MHz. Vulkan Graphics Api is supported by this device so we can expect the new premium games to run on this device. The Fingerprint reader makes a comeback on this device with enhanced, more accurate and faster fingerprint recognition with Level 4 authentication measures.
Software
On the software side this device comes with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box with Huawei’s own custom skin EMUI V5.0. On this device Huawei has primarily focused on user experience and performance. They said that they have developed some tools which will keep up the smooth performance even after months of use. They claimed that even after 200 apps installed, 5000 contacts added and used for 16 months will not much drop the performance of the device.
This beast comes at the starting price of €699 which is approx 770 USD which is pretty expensive. The device will be available in – China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Thailand and United Arab Emirates. The availability may expand further on the future considering how popular it can be among the consumers.
